Redefining Success at Any Age: Anne Goldberg’s Journey Empowering Seniors in Tech

On the latest episode of Pathways Unleashed—a special edition of the Pathways with Amber Stitt podcast—host Amber Stitt sits down with Anne Goldberg, a trailblazer passionately redefining what it means to find purpose, community, and success well past the traditional “retirement age.” Anne, who proudly proclaims herself a “savvy senior working in tech,” shares her inspiring journey into entrepreneurship and her mission to help other seniors navigate the digital world with confidence.

A Divinely Inspired Path

Anne’s story begins with a moment of surrender. In 2013, after years of professional uncertainty following the 2009 financial crash, Anne hit a crossroads. “I came home one day, I said, ‘That’s it. I surrender,’” she recalls. With no clear path in sight, she asked God for guidance. Within ten days, she received a sign—six seniors, out of the blue, called to ask if she could teach them how to use computers. By the sixth call, Anne knew this was her calling. She quickly landed a job at an independent living facility and began her new role as an empowering tech instructor for seniors.

Old Enough to Have a Past, Young Enough to Have a Future

Anne’s infectious optimism about age is encapsulated in the phrase: “Old enough to have a past, young enough to have a future”—a mantra passed down to her at age 30, which she now uses to inspire other seniors. “We have a future, but that future is determined by the choices we make. Our health, our wellness, our attitude—all has to do with the choices we make,” Anne shares, urging seniors to reclaim agency over their lives and futures.

Empowering Seniors with Technology

One of the main themes of the episode is the importance—and the challenges—of keeping up with technology as we age. Anne emphasizes that it’s not about mastering every new app, but learning the language of smartphones: tapping, pressing, swiping—all gestures that are second nature to digital natives, but can be daunting for those who didn’t grow up with tech. “Teach them how to interact with the phone. Because the language of smartphones is touch,” Anne advises. Sometimes, simply knowing the difference between a tap and a tap-and-hold can make all the difference.

Amber, herself part of the “sandwich generation,” empathizes with this challenge, noting how even her tech-savvy grandmother sometimes needs help. Anne highlights that the need for support is universal, and stresses the importance of patience and encouragement over frustration when helping older family members with their devices.

Security, Cost, and Accessibility

When asked about the best phones for seniors, Anne offers practical advice: while Android devices offer more budget-friendly options, she often recommends Apple devices for their superior security and easily deployable updates—a critical factor for seniors vulnerable to scams or malware. Safety is paramount, especially as cyber threats evolve. Anne equates unsolicited texts or emails from strangers to someone tapping you on the shoulder on the street—her advice: “Hang up. Delete the text. Delete the email. Do not interact.”

Taking Action: Resources for Seniors and Families

Anne’s mission is to make tech literacy accessible and affordable. Once her book (currently in graphic design) launches, she’ll be offering newsletters with quick Android and iPhone tips, affordable webinars, short video tutorials, and deeper-dive lessons through her website, TakeThisPhoneAndShoveIt.com. She keeps prices low so seniors with limited income aren’t left behind. Private in-home lessons and virtual sessions (where feasible) further bridge the digital divide.

Before every session, Anne encourages her students to take a deep breath—a reminder to approach technology with patience, openness, and a sense of humor. “It’s intimidating to them. They think they’re stupid. But nobody is born knowing this stuff!”

A New Chapter for All Ages

Anne Goldberg’s journey is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to start a new chapter—and never too late to dare greatly. Her work not only empowers seniors but also inspires all of us to stay curious, resilient, and open to learning at every age. As Amber Stitt beautifully sums up: “Success can happen at any age.”
